What do the terms peer reviewed or refereed mean when referring to a scholarly journal?

Peer reviewed or refereed journals require that articles are evaluated by experts in the field before they are accepted for publication. Although most scholarly journals are refereed or peer reviewed, some are not. If a professor requires only peer reviewed or refereed journals for your research and you need assistance to determine if a journal meets that criteria, please contact a librarian through Ask a Librarian.
